A suit is the one item in your bag that has to look right the moment you arrive. The good news is that packing a suit in a garment bag is mostly about two things: keeping the jacket on its shoulders, and not cramming the bag so full that everything presses against it. Here is the five-step method we use for weddings, interviews and work trips.
What you need
- A garment bag or convertible garment bag that is long enough for the jacket and trousers to hang without bending.
- A sturdy hanger with wide shoulders. A thin wire hanger will leave marks at the shoulders of a jacket.
- A clip or bar hanger for the trousers.
- A shoe bag, and a few packing cubes for socks, belts and underwear.
Step 1: Prep the suit before it goes in
Empty every pocket. Phones, keys and wallets leave outlines in fabric and make the bag lopsided. Brush off lint, check for any loose threads, and if the suit has been in the closet a while, hang it in a steamy bathroom for ten minutes so the fabric relaxes before you pack it.
Step 2: Hang the jacket on its shoulders
Put the jacket on a proper hanger, centre the collar, and fasten the top button so the front keeps its shape. Smooth the shoulders and sleeves down with your hand. The jacket is the part of a suit that wrinkles worst when it is folded, so it should hang for as much of the trip as you can manage.
Step 3: Handle the trousers separately
Line up the trouser legs along their creases and clip the cuffs to a clip hanger, or fold them once over the bar of a hanger. Hang the trousers behind the jacket rather than over it. That keeps the weight off the jacket's shoulders.
Step 4: Fill the bag, but don't overstuff it
A garment bag works because the suit hangs flat. Once you pack shirts and shoes tightly around it, the bag can't do that job. A few habits help:
- Fold dress shirts and lay them flat in the pockets or the bottom of the bag, or roll them into a packing cube.
- Put shoes in a shoe bag so soles don't touch the fabric, and keep them at the bottom.
- Roll ties and belts and tuck them into a pocket of the bag or a cube.
- Leave a little air around the suit. If the bag is bulging, take something out.
Step 5: Close, carry and unpack quickly
Zip the bag fully and carry it by its handles or fold it as the bag is designed to. On a convertible bag like our Stateroom garment duffel, the suit hangs flat inside, then the bag folds in half and zips into a duffel you can carry by the handles or the shoulder strap. When you arrive, hang the suit up the same day. Fabric needs a few hours to settle, and a steamy bathroom does a lot of the rest.
Can you take a garment bag on a plane?
Most airlines let you bring a garment bag as a personal or carry-on item, but rules vary by airline and fare, so check your airline's baggage policy before you fly. If you check the bag instead, lay the suit as flat as possible and avoid stacking heavy items on top.
What if you don't have a garment bag?
You can still pack a suit in a regular suitcase. The usual method is to turn the jacket inside out, fold it in half along the shoulders so the lining is on the outside, and lay it flat on top of your other clothes. Fold the trousers along their creases and place them beneath. For more detail on folding methods, see the guides from Travelpro, SmarterTravel and Generation Tux.
Frequently asked questions
How do you pack a suit in a garment bag?
Hang the jacket on a wide-shoulder hanger with the top button fastened, hang the trousers behind it, add shirts and shoes around the suit without overfilling, then zip the bag closed and carry it as designed.
Should a suit be folded or hung when travelling?
Hanging is best, because it avoids creases altogether. If you have to fold it, turn the jacket inside out and fold it once along the shoulders.
How many suits fit in a garment bag?
One or two. Two suits fit if the bag has room for both hangers side by side, but the bag should never be so full that the suits press together.
Where do the shoes go in a garment bag?
Put them in a separate shoe bag at the bottom of the bag so the soles stay away from the fabric.
